A House Foreign Affairs Committee Majority hearing was cut short on March 11, after Chairman Keith Self misgendered Representative Sarah McBride, the first openly transgender member of Congress, while introducing her. The moment was captured in footage streamed live by the House Foreign Affairs Committee. “I now recognize the Representative from Delaware, Mister McBride,” Self is heard saying.“Thank you, Madam Chair,” McBride replies. When asked by Massachusetts Rep. William Keating to repeat his introduction, Self said they had “set the standard on the floor of the house.” “Chairman, you are out of order. Mr Chairman, have you no decency,” Keating said. “This is not decent. You will not continue [the hearing] with me unless you introduce a duly elected representative the right way.” Self then proceeds to adjourn the hearing, and members of the committee are seen leaving the room.
