On Thursday, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), former President Donald Trump‘s running mate, announced that he has accepted CBS’s invitation to participate in a vice presidential debate on Oct. 1, following Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Vice President Kamala Harris‘s running mate, acceptance the day before.

In a post on X, Vance confirmed his participation in the debate and expressed his willingness to take part in an additional debate hosted by CNN in September, even though this event has not been previously publicized.

In response to Walz’s debate confirmation post, Vance wrote on X, “The American people deserve as many debates as possible, which is why President Trump has challenged Kamala to three of them already.”

Vance continued, “Not only do I accept the CBS debate on October 1st, I accept the CNN debate on September 18th as well. I look forward to seeing you at both!”

Historically, there has only been one vice presidential debate per election cycle.

While Walz has not yet responded to the proposed Sept. 18 debate on CNN, he did express his enthusiasm for debating Vance during his first rally as Harris’s running mate last week, saying, “I can’t wait to debate the guy.”

On Wednesday, CBS announced it had proposed scheduling the debate for either Sept. 17, Sept. 18, Oct. 1 or Oct. 6.

The debate will be moderated by Norah O’Donnell, anchor of CBS Evening News, and Margaret Brennan, host of Face The Nation.

In response to the debate’s confirmation, a CNN spokesperson said in a statement, “We are always in communication with the campaigns around opportunities for the American people to hear from leading candidates for President and Vice President of the United States, and we look forward to this programming in the fall.”

The Oct. 1 vice presidential debate will occur after the first scheduled debate between Harris and Trump, set for Sept. 10 and hosted by ABC News.

While Trump has also accepted debate invitations from Fox News for Sept. 4 and NBS News for Sept. 25, the Harris campaign has stated that they will attend the Sept. 10 debate before considering any additional dates.
