United Auto Workers Score Big Victories In New Contracts With The Big Three

The United Auto Workers union has arrived at a tentative agreement with General Motors, marking the final of the major three U.S. automakers to do so.

This step may be among the final actions needed to bring an end to the autoworkers’ strike, which has lasted for over six weeks.

At first, the union requested that employees go on strike at a small number of factories, but eventually intensified their efforts by initiating more stoppages, placing more stress on the car manufacturers.

In the last week, the union has achieved preliminary settlements with Ford and Stellantis. As with the Ford agreement, the GM contract also involves a salary increase of approximately 25% over four and a half years.

However, members of the union still need to approve all three agreements.

When questioned about the agreement on Monday, President Joe Biden expressed his approval and gave the journalists a thumbs-up signal. Biden’s strong backing of the strike is likely to help him politically in the 2024 election.
