WASHINGTON, DC - JANUARY 19: (L-R) Douglas Emhoff, U.S. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, Dr. Jill Biden and U.S. President-elect Joe Biden look down the National Mall as lamps are lit to honor the nearly 400,000 American victims of the coronavirus pandemic at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool January 19, 2021 in Washington, DC. As the nation's capital has become a fortress city of roadblocks, barricades and 20,000 National Guard troops due to heightened security around Biden's inauguration, 200,000 small flags were installed on the National Mall to honor the nearly 400,000 Americans killed by COVID-19. The United States passed another grim milestone Saturday, now marking 500,000 deaths from COVID-19.
“We are still at about 100,000 cases a day. We are still at around 1,500 to 3,500 deaths per day. The cases are more 2½-fold times what we saw over the summer,” said CDC Director Rochelle Walensky in a statement Sunday. “It’s encouraging to see these trends coming down, but they’re coming down from an extraordinarily high place.”
Johns Hopkins University reported Monday that the United States has sustained 28,138,103 cases of COVID-19 in total. The next most diseased country is India with 11,005,850 total cases.
“The only thing that I would just encourage all of us is that rather than looking back and saying what the heck happened here, now let’s just go forward and be completely committed as a unified country to just go at this together,” Dr. Anthony Fauci said to ABC Monday.
