U.S. Passes 1 Million COVID-19 Cases, A Third Of The World’s Total

The United States now has a million coronavirus cases, which is one third of the world’s cases.

This new milestone comes with the news that more Americans have died in six weeks due to the coronavirus than deaths in the nine years of the Vietnam War.

President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, “The experts got it wrong,” when asked why he had previously claimed coronavirus cases in the United States would drop to zero. He added, “I think we’ve done a great job in the sense that we were early … by banning China … we probably saved hundreds of thousands of lives.”

Trump also blamed the high number of cases on more testing. “We’re going to show more cases, because we’re doing much, much more testing,” he said.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told CNN that he hopes everyone who needs a test will be able to get one by the end of May or the beginning of June.

“It isn’t perfect yet by any means,” Fauci said. “It isn’t perfect, and we’re not there yet — and we’re not — but we’re going to get there; we’re going to get there soon.”
