COVENTRY, ENGLAND - DECEMBER 08: Margaret Keenan, 90, is the first patient in the United Kingdom to receive the Pfizer/BioNtech covid-19 vaccine at University Hospital, Coventry, administered by nurse May Parsons, at the start of the largest ever immunisation programme in the UK's history on December 8, 2020 in Coventry, United Kingdom. More than 50 hospitals across England were designated as covid-19 vaccine hubs, the first stage of what will be a lengthy vaccination campaign. NHS staff, over-80s, and care home residents will be among the first to receive the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, which recently received emergency approval from the country's health authorities. The United States has increased the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in a day from 1.3 million in February to 2 million. President Joe Biden‘s goal of administering 100 million shots in his first 100 days is a near-certainty.
The most recent reports from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say that 57 million Americans have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose and 27 million have received two. Of those doses, 42 million doses came from Pfizer-BioNTech and 40 million came from Moderna. The CDC estimates that a grand total of 82,572,848 Americans have received at least one shot, meaning that Biden and his team may reach their goal with weeks to spare before their hundredth day.
The CDC’s new estimates come days after Biden announced that the U.S. will have enough vaccine supply to immunize every American by the end of May, two months earlier than his prior projections.
American production of COVID-19 vaccines production saw a major breakthrough Sunday when Biden announced that pharmaceutical companies Merck would focus on manufacturing Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine instead of researching their own.
