Trump’s PAC Spent More On Legal Fees Than Supporting GOP Candidates

More Republican money from donors has been used to paying former President Donald Trump‘s legal fees since he left office than for supporting Republican congressional campaigns, according to a new report from the Washington Post.

Ads and requests sent out by Trump’s Save America PAC for fundraising emphasize the midterm elections with messages such as, “It is IMPERATIVE that we win BIG in November,” but have spent $9 million on lawyers and funding nonprofits where many former members of the Trump administration now work.

Only around $8.4 million has actually gone to funding Republican campaigns.

Trump is currently under investigation for the possible mishandling of White House documents, fraudulent business practices and his role in inciting the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Filings revealed that the Save America PAC issued a $3 million check, its largest payment in the last 20 months, to secure a law firm to defend Trump in the Justice Department’s investigation into documents he took to Mar-a-Lago following his time in the White House.

This is especially striking as many Republican candidates are seeking financial support heading into the midterms next month. For example, Herschel Walker (R), who is running for U.S. Senate in Georgia, had $6.8 million heading into the final months while incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock (D) boasted $22.2 million.

Other Republicans, especially those who are trying to unseat an already sitting Democratic senator, are facing low account balances.
