Trump’s Comments About ‘Trophy Wives’ During Speech To West Point Graduates Raise Eyebrows

President Donald Trump delivered a commencement speech to graduates at the United States Military Academy at West Point on May 24. Still, his comments about “trophy wives” and “transgenders” in the military got the most attention.

“He ended up getting a divorce. Found a new wife. Could you say a trophy wife? I guess we can say a trophy wife. It didn’t work out too well.” Trump said in the speech, referring to real estate developer William Levitt.

“But that doesn’t work out too well, I must tell you, a lot of trophy wives, it doesn’t work out,” he said.

Trump highlighted Levitt’s life during the speech. He described the man as a “great, great real estate man” who eventually lost his “momentum” and got a “trophy wife.”

But the president also hailed his dismantling of the diversity, equity and inclusion policies.

“We’ve liberated our troops from divisive and demeaning political trainings,” Trump said. “There will be no more critical race theory or transgender for everybody forced onto our brave men and women in uniform – or on anybody else for that matter, in this country.”

The Trump Administration previously moved forward to bar transgender individuals from enlisting and serving in the military.

While an outright ban is being challenged, the Supreme Court allowed a temporary ban. Any gender-dysphoria-related procedures, once provided to service members in the military, are also temporarily paused.
