Former President Donald Trump‘s attorney says he will ask a court to continue blocking the release of Trump’s tax returns days after the Department of Justice ordered they be turned over to the House Ways and Means Committee.
“There is no evidence of any wrongdoing here and I object to the release of the returns not only on behalf of my client but on behalf of all future holders of the office of the president of the United States,” Ronald Fischetti, Trump’s lawyer, told the Wall Street Journal.
Assistant Attorney General Dawn Johnsen said last week that the Treasury Department will support a congressional committee’s request for Trump’s taxes. “The statute at issue here is unambiguous: ‘Upon written request’ of the chairman of one of the three congressional tax committees, the Secretary ‘shall furnish’ the requested tax information to the Committee,” Johnsen wrote.
Should the committee receive Trump’s tax returns, the documents will be examined in a closed session, but they may eventually become public information if the committee votes in support of a release.
