Trump Vows To Campaign Against GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski After Impeachment Vote

Former President Donald Trump has announced plans to campaign against Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) in the upcoming 2022 Alaska Senate race. Murkowski was one of the seven Senate Republicans to vote in favor of the former president’s impeachment in January.

Trump vowed revenge against all Republicans who voted for his impeachment or conviction in January, and Murkowski is the only senator up for reelection in 2022. Trump released a statement on Saturday saying, “I will not be endorsing, under any circumstances, the failed candidate from the great State of Alaska, Lisa Murkowski. She represents her state badly and her country even worse. I do not know where other people will be next year, but I know where I will be — in Alaska campaigning against a disloyal and very bad Senator,” Trump said in a statement.

Murkowski upsets Republicans regularly. She recently voted in favor of Rep. Deb Haaland‘s (D-New Mexico) nomination as interior secretary. Murkowski was the only member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee to vote in favor of her nomination, citing Haaland’s Indigenous American roots as justification.

Alaska’s new ranked-choice voting system, however, may be an obstacle for Trump in his plan to unseat the senator. Murkowski is extremely likely to end up as the GOP nominee no matter how hard Trump campaigns because the top four candidates will move on to the general election.

Murkowski has not directly responded to Trump, but the senator said on her guilty vote in January that, “I know that my actions, my vote may have political consequences. And I understand that. I absolutely understand that. But I can’t be afraid of that.”
