Trump To Appear In Court For Jan. 6 Case Arraignment On Thursday

Donald Trump was indicted on Tuesday for his attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. He is expected to appear for his arraignment at the D.C. district courthouse on Thursday.

During the arraignment, prosecutors will summarize the four conspiracy and obstruction counts brought against the former president by Special Counsel Jack Smith. Judge Tanya Chutkan will then set bail conditions.

She will also create a schedule for pretrial motions and discovery. Both sides are expected to file motions that will determine what evidence and legal arguments can be used during the trial, which may still be months away.

Trump has now been indicted by Smith twice. In June, he was charged on 37 counts for willful retention of national security information and conspiracy to obstruct justice. Appeals about the structure of this case have already prolonged the trial, which is set to begin in December.

As the current GOP frontrunner for the 2024 presidential election, Trump has raised concerns about how his candidacy will impede his right to a fair trial. He has already pushed to delay his classified documents trial until after the election, and will undoubtedly try to do the same with the January 6 trial.

Tuesday’s indictment has already sparked outrage from Trump’s MAGA allies, some of which are officials and even his opponents in the 2024 election.
