Former President Donald Trump mistook E. Jean Carroll for his ex-wife Marla Maples in an October 2022 deposition from Carroll’s defamation case against him, according to newly released transcripts.
Carroll brought the case after Trump denied her rape allegations under the Adult Survivors Act, which is a New York law that allows victims to open a case after the normal time period to do so has passed.

“I don’t know who – it’s Marla,” Trump said when shown a photo of himself with his ex-wife Ivana, Carroll and her then-husband. “That’s Marla, yeah. That’s my wife.”

He was then told by his lawyer, Alina Habba, “No, that’s Carroll.”
Carroll maintains that she was raped by Trump in a changing room of a department store in the 1990s, but Trump said that her accusations are false, and noted that while he believes it is not politically correct to say, Carroll is not his “type.”
Some suggest that his identification of Carroll as his ex-wife undermines his claim that Carroll wasn’t his type. Trump was married to Maples from 1993 to 1999, after his marriage to Ivana had ended and before his marriage to his third and current wife, Melania Trump.
Trump continued in the deposition, “She said that I did something to her that never took place. There was no anything. I know nothing about this nutjob.”
He added that he didn’t think he had ever pressured a woman to have sex with him.
“The answer is no,” he told Caroll’s attorney Roberta Kaplan. “But you may have some people, like your client, who are willing to lie.”
The trial is scheduled to being in April.
