Trump Suggests Replacing Electoral College Members With Loyalists Who Will Overturn Election Results

After being handed a string of legal defeats on Friday, President Donald Trump’s chances at re-election are looking more slim by the day. However, the president will not step down without a fight, and continues to consider all possibilities, no matter how unrealistic they seem.

At a meeting on Wednesday at the White House, Trump asked his top aides about a wild plan to replace electors in swing states with loyalists who will vote to secure him a second term. The plan would require Republican state legislatures deciding to ignore the states’ results and instead send a new group of electors to the Electoral College who would cast their votes for the current president.

Although this plan is technically possible to carry out, it has been widely dismissed as impractical and an insult to American democracy. And it doesn’t seem as though Trump is too serious about actually following through with this idea. The New York Times reported that the conversation he had with his aides was not detailed or really serious. “He knows it’s over,” one adviser said, but this is a way of coping with his uncertain post-presidency future.
