On Tuesday, former President Donald Trump filed a lawsuit against The New York Times and his niece, Mary Trump, claiming she broke the terms of a family settlement agreement issued in 2001.
Trump is suing both parties after his niece exposed his old tax records to NYT in 2018 and went on to publish a bombshell book last year that included other confidential information about him.
In the complaint, Trump’s attorney alleges that the defendants “engaged in an insidious plot to obtain confidential and highlyn sensitive records which they exploited for their own benefit and utilized as a means of falsely legitimizing their publicized works.”
In her 2020 tell-all-book and subsequent interviews, Mary Trump admitted that she was indeed the main source for NYT’s 2018 article, the Pulitzer-winning report that took 18 months to investigate.

In response to the lawsuit, Mary Trump responded Tuesday by saying that her uncle is a “loser” and that he did it out of “desperation.”
“I think he is a fucking loser, and he is going to throw anything against the wall he can,” said Mary Trump during her interview. “It’s desperation. The walls are closing in and he is throwing anything against the wall that will stick. As is always the case with Donald, he’ll try and change the subject.”
It is not the first time that the former president has filed a lawsuit against the Times. In March, Trump unsuccessfully sued the paper for defaming him in reporting on the Russian probe.
