On Wednesday, Former President Donald Trump said he is still refusing to concede the 2020 presidential election. “I never admitted defeat… I have not conceded” when asked about the 2020 election. Trump, who lost in November by seven million votes and significantly in the electoral college, has maintained this false narrative of massive voter fraud since then.
In the interview, conducted on America’s Real Voice by David Brody, Trump is questioned about an old headline that quoted him saying “we didn’t win” in reference to the election. Trump ignored the headline and reiterated that he didn’t concede.
A concession, usually done after the final tally of votes where one candidate calls the winner to admit defeat, is not a legal mandate. It was popularised after the 1896 election when the first concession telegram was sent. Since then every losing presidential candidate has admitted defeat and sent a concession, until Trump in 2020.
