After his inauguration on Monday, President Donald Trump has signed over 200 executive actions. Among the flurry of orders were policies relating to transgender rights and programs that promote diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).
Other executive actions to pardon Jan. 6 offenses, withdraw the U.S. from the Paris climate agreement, order the Justice Department not to enforce a law that effectively bans TikTok for 75 days, call for the U.S. to leave the World Health Organization, and instruct federal agencies to deny birthright citizenship to children of parents who are unauthorized immigrants or temporary visa holders, and among many more.
He also used his presidential powers to initiate a crackdown on immigration, designating cartels and gangs as terrorist groups and shutting down asylum and refugee admissions. He has tasked the military with enforcement at the southern border.
Among the executive orders signed is a policy that requires the federal government to recognize only two sexes that cannot be changed: male and female. This order will also work to eliminate the opportunity for transgender women to be placed in prisons or migrant shelters based on their preferred gender identity.

According to a Trump administration official, “nonbinary” or “other” options will be removed from federal documents such as passports and visas per the White House’s instruction.
Trump signed another order that repeals a provision by the Biden administration to allow transgender troops to serve in the military. In his day-one efforts to eliminate policies from the Biden administration, Trump cleared the way to institute a new ban similar to one from his first administration that prevents transgender troops from serving.
In addition to signing this order, Trump also ordered the Office of Management and Budget to coordinate with agencies to terminate all mandates, policies and programs that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. This includes reviewing facilities that have been renamed as part of DEI initiatives.
One order will end several diversity training programs as an attempt to end “radical and wasteful government DEI programs,” the official said. This would target several environmental justice programs, equity-related grants and equity initiatives.
