Trump Says He Still Believes Coronavirus Will ‘Disappear,’ Despite U.S. Topping 30,000 Cases Per Day

President Donald Trump reaffirmed his belief Wednesday that coronavirus will “just disappear.”

“I think we’re going to be very good with the coronavirus. I think that at some point that’s going to sort of just disappear, I hope,” Trump told Fox Business Network.

Trump’s comments come as the U.S. reported more than 130,000 deaths and nearly three million cases. Although spread in several European countries that were originally considered hotspots has dropped into the three-digit territory, the U.S. continues to diagnose more than 30,000 cases per day.

The president said in February, before the outbreak spread and caused an economic slowdown, that “it’s going to disappear… one day it’s like a miracle, it will disappear.”

Asked if he “still” believed coronavirus will “disappear,” Trump told Fox “I do.”

“I think we’re going to have a vaccine very soon too,” he added.

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany backed up Trump’s comments later that day saying, “the president is confident that it will disappear. He’s put together a revolutionary first-class team that is going to break through bureaucracy and get us a vaccine.”

However Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert and a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, indicated on Tuesday that the U.S. has not crossed the threshold where the virus will begin to disappear.

“We are now having [40,000+] new cases a day. I would not be surprised if we go up to 100,000 a day if this does not turn around,” Fauci said. “Clearly we are not in total control.”
