Trump Says He ‘Allowed’ ‘Absolutely Atrocious’ Sen. Susan Collins To Win

Former President Donald Trump called Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine “absolutely atrocious” in his latest dig. Trump added that she would have had no chance at winning reelection in 2020 if he had spoken out against her in the statement released Monday morning.

Collins has outwardly expressed criticism of Trump. She is leading efforts to reform the 1887 Electoral Count Act to make it more difficult to discard certified electoral votes when Congress convenes to count them. The senator also voted to convict Trump for his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and has not yet said if she would vote for Trump if he were to run again in 2024.

“Just one word about her and the fact that she didn’t help the fisherman, as their rights were taken from them from the federal government, and the lumberjacks, she would have had no chance to win,” Trump added in his statement. “But I remained silent and positive and allowed her to have her victory. She would have lost in a landslide. Gee, aren’t I nice?”

Collins actually backed both initiatives the Trump administration worked on to support the two industries. Under Trump, there was a proposed Environmental Protection Agency rule that aimed to give the fishing industry time to embrace engines that would be better for the environment. She also supported Trump’s financial aid offer to lobstermen who were impacted by his trade war with China.

Collins spokeswoman Annie Clark challenged  Trump’s claim that Collins wouldn’t have won if Trump spoke out against her.

“In 2020, Senator Collins was the only Senate candidate in 69 races to win by splitting the ticket with the state’s presidential results — something she has done three times, the only sitting senator to do so,” said Clark.
