Trump Says Biden Is ‘Against The Bible’ & Would ‘Hurt God,’ Former VP Calls Comments ‘Shameful’

Former Vice President Joe Biden responded to President Donald Trump’s attacks, who on Thursday claimed Biden is “against the Bible” and will “hurt God.”

“Like so many people, my faith has been the bedrock foundation of my life: it’s provided me comfort in moments of loss and tragedy, it’s kept me grounded and humbled in times of triumph and joy,” Biden said in a statement. “And in this moment of darkness for our country – of pain, of division, and of sickness for so many Americans – my faith has been a guiding light for me and a constant reminder of the fundamental dignity and humanity that God has bestowed upon all of us.”

During a speech to supporters at the Cleveland airport, Trump went on a lengthy series of attacks on Biden.

“He’s following the radical left agenda. Take away your guns, destroy your Second Amendment. No religion, no anything. Hurt the Bible. Hurt God. He’s against God. He’s against guns. He’s against energy. Our kind of energy. I don’t think he’s going to do too well in Ohio. If he did, we’d have a big story. He’s not going to do well,” Trump said.

Trump added that Biden has “done nothing” during his whole career in politics and claimed Biden was not “at the top of his game.”

Trump also attacked Biden in a radio interview Thursday with Geraldo Rivera, repeating the comments on religion.

“He’s against the Bible. Essentially against religion. But against the Bible,” he said of Biden.

Biden in his statement called Trump’s comments “shameful” and said they were “beneath the office he holds.”

“They show us a man willing to stoop to any low for political gain, and someone whose actions are completely at odds with the values and teachings that he professes to believe in,” Biden said.

Biden is a practicing Catholic who regularly attends Mass at St. Joseph’s on the Brandywine in Greenville, Delaware. He often speaks about his faith in public and he once spoke about how religion helped him when he lost his wife and one-year-old daughter in a car accident in 1972, and more recently, his son Beau who died of cancer.

Biden’s campaign also responded to Trump’s comments regarding Biden’s faith.

“Joe Biden’s faith is at the core of who he is: He’s lived it with dignity his entire life, and it’s been a source of strength and comfort in times of extreme hardship,” Biden spokesman Andrew Bates said in a statement. “Donald Trump is the only president in our history to have tear-gassed peaceful Americans and thrown a priest out of his church just so he could profane it – and a Bible – for his own cynical optics as he sought to tear our nation apart at a moment of crisis and pain.”
