President Donald Trump retweeted on Monday a doctored image of Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) wearing Muslim attire and standing in front of the Iranian flag.
“The corrupted Dems trying their best to come to the Ayatollah’s rescue #NancyPelosiFakeNews,” read the caption.
The tweet was criticized as promoting Islamophobia.
“The image is a hodgepodge of anti-Muslim tropes and garb from many traditions including some that are frequently used to stereotype and attack Muslims,” the special counsel at Muslim Advocates, Madihha Ahussain, said in a statement. “It’s disappointing but not surprising that the president would use his massive Twitter platform to spread this kind of harmful, ignorant, anti-Muslim bigotry.”

Schumer responded on Twitter saying, “How low can you go?”
The tweet came amid the fallout over his decision to assassinate a top Iranian general, Qassem Soleimani. Several lawmakers complained that there was no evidence of an “imminent” threat and were disappointed by the closed-door briefing they were given.
The White House press secretary, Stephanie Grisham, told Fox News that the tweet was in regard to Democrats sympathizing with Iranian leaders and taking the side of those working to kill Americans.
According to the Associated Press, the Twitter account in question has a history of tweeting about Iran in both English and Persian and promoting pro-Trump talking points.
