Trump Refuses To Call Gov. Tim Walz After Minnesota Lawmaker Shootings: ‘He’s A Mess’
President Donald Trump said that he would not be calling Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) after a deadly attack on two Democratic lawmakers.
Walz described the shooting spree as “an act of targeted political violence.” State Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman (D) and her husband both lost their lives in this attack. Senator John Hoffman (D) and his wife were also injured in a separate incident with the same gunman, but are expected to recover. While Trump expressed his condolences for the victims a few hours after the shooting, he has refused to contact the governor.
“I think the governor of Minnesota is so whacked out. I’m not calling. Why would I call him?” The president said to reporters while returning from the Group of Seven (G7) summit. “The guy doesn’t have a clue. He’s a mess. So, you know, I could be nice and call, but why waste time?”
When the governor’s office was asked to remark on Trump’s comments, a spokesperson told The Hill that Walz only hoped for the president to remain focused on the victims during this time.

“Governor Walz wishes that President Trump would be a President for all Americans, but this tragedy isn’t about Trump or Walz. It’s about the Hortman family, the Hoffman family, and the state of Minnesota, and the Governor remains focused on helping all three heal.”
At a later press conference, Walz confirmed Hortman’s death. “Our state lost a great leader, and I lost a dearest friend.”
After a two-day search for the shooter, Vance Boelter was detained and is facing multiple federal and state murder charges. Boelter’s roommate shared that he voted for Trump in the 2024 election and was strongly against abortion, leading many to agree with Walz that the act was targeted.
