At a congressional Republican conference at his resort in Doral, Florida, on Monday, President Donald Trump mused about serving a third term. He asked the House speaker, Mike Johnson, if he was allowed before stopping and saying, “Mike, I better not get you involved in that argument.”

“I’ve raised a lot of money for the next race that I assume I can’t use for myself, but I’m not 100 percent sure,” Trump told House Republicans. “I think I’m not allowed to run again.”

The 22nd Amendment states: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.”

Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tennessee) has proposed revising the Amendment, saying that Trump must be given the time necessary to reverse “our nation’s decay” and restore America to “greatness.” Ogles called Trump the “only figure in modern history” capable of accomplishing that goal.

“To that end, I am proposing an amendment to the Constitution to revise the limitations imposed by the 22nd Amendment on presidential terms. This Amendment would allow President Trump to serve three terms, ensuring that we can sustain the bold leadership our nation so desperately needs,” Ogles said.

Trump would be 82 years old by Election Day 2028.

Trump has repeatedly spoken of the possibility of a third term. “We are going to win four more years,” he said at a campaign rally in August 2020. “And then after that, we’ll go for another four years because they spied on my campaign. We should get a redo of four years.”

After the November election, Trump floated the idea again: “I suspect I won’t be running again—unless you do something.”
