President Donald Trump revealed his plan to build the “Golden Dome,” a $175 billion, three-year project that takes inspiration from Israel’s Iron Dome.

The “Golden Dome” is meant to be a missile defense system capable of stopping missiles launched from anywhere in the world and into space. The project aims to intercept missiles in midair.

The Pentagon has already provided various plans for the White House to develop the “Golden Dome.”

The first $25 billion of the project’s funding will come from the GOP’s mega bill, which passed the House on Thursday. Trump stated that the “Golden Dome” will become fully operational before he leaves office. However, the overall $175 billion estimate and the timeline for completion doesn’t align with the estimates of many experts.

The Congressional Budget Office estimated that the project would cost over $500 billion and be completed over two decades. Other experts have suggested that it could cost hundreds of billions.

The project still needs $150 billion to be funded in order to reach the $175 billion budget that the Trump administration has set.

Chinese officials have warned that the “Golden Dome” project could spark an arms race.

Trump has named General Michael Guetlein, the Space Force’s vice chief of space operations, the project’s leader.
