Despite recent federal charges, Donald Trump has announced that he will continue with his 2024 campaign even if he is convicted of a felony. The former president claims that he would even campaign from prison.
On Thursday, the Department of Justice indicted Trump on 37 counts after he mishandled classified documents, lied to the FBI, and obstructed the investigation that has taken place over the past several months.
“I’ll never leave,” he told Politico. “I did nothing wrong!”
Trump is the first former president in American history to face criminal charges. United States law does not prohibit Trump from running while under indictment, nor does it prohibit him from remaining in the election, should he be convicted.

According to a study done by ABC/Ipsos, 48% of Americans believe that Trump should have been indicted, and 35% believe he should not have been. The partisan split reflects the polarizing effect that Trump has, with 86% of Democrats saying he should have been indicted, and 67% of Republicans saying he should not have.
Trump has rallied his supporters around the narrative that paints the Department of Justice as biased against the former president.
“The ridiculous and baseless indictment by the Biden administration’s weaponized department of injustice will go down as among the most horrific abuses of power in the history of our country,” Trump said in a speech on Saturday.
Republican officials are defending Trump, even those who will be running against him in the 2024 election. Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Florida), took to Twitter to express his disapproval of the charges.
“The weaponization of federal law enforcement represents a moral threat to society… Why so zealous in pursuing Trump yet so passive about Hillary or Hunter?” Desantis wrote.
Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has also backed Trump’s claims that the investigations were politically motivated.
“The American people are exhausted by the prosecutorial overreach, double standards, and vendetta politics. It’s time to move beyond the endless drama and distractions,” Haley tweeted.
Trump is scheduled to appear at the federal courthouse in Miami on Tuesday for his arraignment.
