President Donald Trump and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) shared a hug before the president made an announcement at Selfridge Air National Guard Base. In his speech, the president commended the governor.
Prior to the announcement on April 29, Trump greeted Whitmer with a hug after landing in Michigan. While speaking at the air base in Macomb County, Michigan, he told the Michigan National Guard that he wanted to offer his gratitude to Whitmer.
Earlier this month, the governor was mocked on social media for hiding her face during her visit to the Oval Office on April 9. Whitmer visited the White House with a bipartisan delegation to discuss problems affecting Michigan, including an ice storm, funding for an Air National Guard Base and tariffs.
“You know, I’m not supposed to do that,” he added. “She’s a Democrat. They say, don’t do that, don’t have her here. I said, ‘No, she’s going to be here.’ She’s done a very good job.”

Trump revealed to the Air National Guard Base that he would replace their old planes with “21 brand-new F-15EX Eagle II fighter jets.” Whitmer joined him at the event, calling the new fighter jet mission as a significant victory for the state.
The president said he and Whitmer spoke earlier about the air base’s future.
“That’s the reason she came to see me, by the way, to save Selfridge,” he shared. “She was very effective.”
Trump then made the Michigan governor take the microphone to speak.
“Well, I hadn’t planned to speak, but on behalf of all the military men and women who serve our country and serve so honorably on behalf of the state of Michigan, I am really d— happy we’re here to celebrate this recapitalization at Selfridge,” she stated. “It’s crucial for the Michigan economy, it’s crucial for the men and women here, for our homeland security and our future.”
She then mentioned that she was “so grateful” that this announcement had been made.
A spokeswoman for Whitmer said she had been planning to appear at the base to “support her troops and the longstanding effort she has made to secure support for Selfridge.”
Comments from the left on social media were not positive about Whitmer’s new closeness to Trump. “Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer meeting Donald Trump on the tarmac and hugging him is icky,” wrote one X user. “She can’t blame this one on an ‘ambush.'”
