Donald Trump became the first sitting president to step inside North Korea on Sunday after Inviting North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un to join him at the DMZ zone on Twitter.
“If Chairman Kim of North Korea sees this, I would meet him at the Border/DMZ just to shake his hand and say Hello(?)!” tweeted the president on Saturday.Kim excepted the president’s offer that evening.
The meeting was a huge step for U.S-North Korea relations especially as it follows an unsuccessful summit in Hanoi, Vietnam earlier this year.
On Sunday, Kim met with Trump in the demilitarized region separating North and South Korea (DMZ). Shortly into their meeting while walking on the lines separating the two Koreas Kim said, “If you step over this line you will be the first U.S. president to step on North Korean soil.” Trump than took the leap. Kim responded, “President Trump has just walked across the demarcation line. That has made him the first U.S. President to visit our country. Actually just looking at this action, this is an expression of his willingness to eliminate all the unfortunate past and open a new future.”
