Trump Lawyer Rudolph Giuliani Interviewed By Special Counsel About Attempts To Overturn 2020 Election

Last week, former Donald Trump lawyer Rudolph Giuliani was interviewed by federal prosecutors working for Special Counsel Jack Smith. Prosecutors are investigating Giuliani’s role in Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

The special counsel’s office has been ramping up its probe in hopes of quickly bringing forth charges for attempting to steal the election, which could possibly include Trump himself. A central question in their investigation is whether those around the former president were aware that he lost in 2020, but still continued raising money off of fraudulent claims.

The interview with Giuliani was voluntary and conducted under a proffer agreement. Proffers occur when defendants agree to provide law enforcement with information that could further their investigation and, in return, prosecutors agree to not use those statements against them in future criminal proceedings.

Giuliani was questioned about an alleged plan to create fake records of pro-Trump electors in swing states that were won by President Joe Biden. Specifically, he was asked about the efforts of John Eastman, another Trump lawyer who advised the former president on ways to stay in office after he lost the 2020 election.

In addition, Giuliani was asked about the events that took place at the Willard Hotel just days before January 6, 2021, when a mob of Trump supporters stormed the U.S. capitol. Giuliani and Eastman, along with other Trump advisories, gathered inside the hotel to discuss strategies just before the insurrection, leading prosecutors to believe that they had a hand in the attack.

Smith and his team are also examining records of Trump’s political action committee, Save America, to which 10% of online donations from his 2024 presidential campaign are being diverted. The former president has been accused of wrongfully using the PAC money to pay for his legal team, and investigators have subpoenaed documents from Giuliani relating to payments that he has received from Save America in recent years.

Giuliani is currently being pursued by the district attorney in Fulton County, Georgia, who is conducting an investigation into Trump’s attempts to reverse the election in the state. He is also facing multiple defamation lawsuits by people he falsely implicated.

It is unclear how many charges Giuliani will face once Smith completes his investigation.
