President Barack Obama
President Donald Trump insulted former President Barack Obama at a press conference at the G7 Summit Monday, saying that he was “outsmarted” by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Russia was taken out of what was then called the G8 because of their illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014.
Trump claimed that Obama was embarrassed that Russia had annexed Crimea from Ukraine. “President Obama was not happy that this happened because it was embarrassing to him, right? It was very embarrassing to him, and he wanted Russia to be out of what was called the G-8. He was outsmarted by Putin. He was outsmarted.”
It is generally understood among current and former United States president’s that they will not criticize each other especially when traveling abroad. But Trump has done this multiple times.

Trump had also pressed the other leaders in the G7 to readmit Russia to the next summit. He told reporters that he was not sure if Putin would attend if invited.
“You have a G-8 — now it’s a G-7 — and you invite the person that was thrown out, really, by President Obama and really because he got outsmarted,” the president said.
Trump had started his remarks about Obama before leaving for the summit and said that he would like for Russia to be there. “I’ve gone to numerous G-7 meetings, and I guess … because Putin outsmarted him, President Obama thought it wasn’t a good thing to have Russia in,” adding that Obama “ wanted Russia out, but I think it’s much more appropriate to have Russia in.”
