ABERDEEN, SCOTLAND - JULY 10: Donald Trump plays a round of golf after the opening of The Trump International Golf Links Course on July 10, 2012 in Balmedie, Scotland. In a moment critics are likening to Marie Antoinette’s infamous “Let them eat cake” remark, President Donald Trump is drawing backlash for playing golf amid a global economic meltdown. As fears of a global recession mount, largely attributable to his aggressive tariff policies, Trump spent the weekend leisurely golfing at his Florida resort, where he took part in the Senior Club Championship.
When a reporter asked about his performance in the tournament, Trump repeatedly emphasized his victory, saying, “Very good, because I won. It’s good to win. You heard I won? Did you hear I won? Just to back it up there—I won. I like to win.” The tone-deaf comments struck many as deeply out of touch, with users on X criticizing the poor timing of Trump’s activities as a clear sign of his lack of concern.
Sen. Adam Schiff (D-California) stated, “This may end up being the most enduring image of the Trump presidency—the president out on a golf cart while people’s retirement is in flames.”
Schiff was referring to the growing concerns that Trump’s economic maneuvers could endanger the financial stability of millions of Americans, particularly in relation to Social Security benefits. In addition, the stock market has been plummeting, with retirement accounts suffering major losses, leaving many worried about their long-term financial security.
