Newly former President Donald Trump-endorsed candidate J.D. Vance‘s (R) former roommate at Yale Law School released screenshots on Monday exposing Vance for calling Trump “America’s Hitler” in a 2016 conversation.
“I go back and forth between thinking Trump is a cynical asshole like Nixon who wouldn’t be that bad (and might even prove to be useful) or that he’s America’s Hitler. How’s that for discouraging?” Vance was seen as saying.
The roommate, Josh McLauren (D), is now a state representative in Georgia.

The screenshot sparked a backlash against Vance, as Democrats accused him of cynicism.
“It’s laughable that the media treats J.D. not liking Trump six years ago as some sort of breaking news, when they’ve already covered it to death since this race began,” Vance’s campaign manager Jordan Wiggins wrote in a statement. “Clearly, President Trump trusts that J.D. is a genuine convert, as out of all the Republican candidates running, he endorsed J.D. and concluded that he is the strongest America First conservative in the race.”
Vance openly criticized Trump in the past, calling himself a “never-Trump guy.” Trump acknowledged that Vance had not always supported him, but that the candidate “gets it now.”
