Former President Barack Obama speaks at the 2020 DNC
On Sunday night, during President Donald Trump’s campaign rally in Henderson, Nevada, the crowd of supporters chanted “lock him up” after the president falsely claimed that former President Barack Obama “spied” on Trump’s 2016 campaign.
Trump said the Obama Administration’s investigation into the Trump campaign’s contacts with Russia in 2016 was motivated to damage Trump’s candidacy and support Hillary Clinton, the then Democratic presidential nominee. “He got caught, We caught him cold, we have him cold, now let’s see what happens,” Trump told the crowd. which began a deafening chant of “lock him up.” The chant “lock him up” is similar to the phrase “lock her up” that Trump supporters used in 2016 when he ran against Clinton. This was in reference to her use of a private email server during her time as secretary of state in the Obama Administration. Trump encouraged the chant, and still claims Clinton belongs in prison.
Glenn Fine, the Justice Department’s inspector general in 2019, stated that Obama and former Vice President Joe Biden, were not involved with the decision to open an investigation on the Trump campaign’s communications with Russia.
