Trump Calls For McConnell’s ‘Impeachment’ Over Talks On Eliminate Debt Ceiling

Former President Donald Trump said that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) should be impeached if supports a plan to eliminate the debt ceiling that has been championed by Democrats — even though there’s no such a mechanism.

Members of Congress can’t be impeached. Representatives and senators may only end their terms early in case of death, resignation or by expulsion from the chamber.

Trump made the remarks during an interview with conservative radio host John Fredericks, who asked him about the potential deal to eliminate the debt ceiling. The former president claimed that Democrats might have “something on” McConnell but didn’t specify the allegation.

“It’s crazy, what’s happening with this debt ceiling,” Trump said. “Mitch McConnell keeps allowing this to happen. They ought to impeach Mitch McConnell, if he allows that. They have something on him, how he approves this thing is incredible.”

A showdown is expected after the midterms when negotiations over the debt ceiling are expected. When this limit is reached, Congress must vote to raise it.

In January, if Republicans control one or both chambers, they will have the power to block any deal and push for cuts.

Trump’s comments are the most recent example of a turbulent relationship between the former president and McConnell. They have not spoken since the senator congratulated President Joe Biden for his victory in 2020.

During the interview, the former president, who has hinted he intends to run in 2024, said he regrets have endorsed McConnell in the past and said that, if elected, he would not support him as Republican leader.
