Trump Blames His Campaign Hack On Iran Amid FBI Investigation

On Saturday, former President Donald Trump revealed that his campaign had been hacked, shortly after Politico reported receiving emails from an anonymous source containing internal campaign documents. On Monday, the FBI stated they have opened an investigation into the alleged hacking.

Politico’s report stated that it had received emails containing internal communications from a senior Trump campaign official, along with a research dossier on Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) as well as Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida), who was also considered for the VP slot.

The dossiers outlined potential vulnerabilities of Vance and Rubio to assist the Trump campaign in its VP selection process.

“These documents were obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States, intended to interfere with the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout our Democratic process,” said Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung in a Saturday statement.

Cheung referenced a recent Microsoft report indicating that Iranian operatives have intensified efforts to influence and disrupt the U.S. presidential election by creating fake news outlets targeting both liberal and conservative voters and attempting to hack an unnamed presidential campaign.

“On Friday, a new report from Microsoft found that Iranian hackers broke into the account of a ‘high ranking official’ on the U.S. presidential campaign in June 204, which coincides with the close timing of President Trump’s selection of a Vice Presidential nominee. This comes after recent reports of an Iranian plot to assassinate President Trump around the same time as the Butler, PA tragedy,” said Cheung.

Cheung continued, “The Iranians know that President Trump will stop their reign of terror just like he did in his first four years in the White House. Any media or news outlet reprinting documents or internal communications are doing the bidding of America’s enemies and doing exactly what they want.”

On Monday, FBI officials confirmed they have launched an investigation into the alleged hack but declined to provide details on the scope of the probe or any potential suspects.

On Saturday, the White House condemned any attempt at foreign interference in American elections.

“As we have said many times, the Biden-Harris Administration strongly condemns any foreign government or entity who attempts to interfere in our electoral process or seeks to undermine confidence in our democratic institutions,” stated a U.S. National Security Council spokesperson.

Regarding Trump’s allegations, the National Security Council deferred to the Justice Department but emphasized that the White House takes “any report of such activity extremely seriously.”

However, it remains unclear whether Iran was behind the hack. The Iranian mission to the UN stated it does “not accord any credence to such reports.”

“The Iranian Government neither possesses nor harbors any intent or motive to interfere in the United States presidential election,” the mission said in a statement.
