President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk have broken off their relationship following Musk’s recent criticism of the president as he exited his special advisory role last week.

Trump expressed disappointment in his formerly close ally during remarks to reporters in the Oval Office.

“Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will anymore,” said Trump.

As his time working within the Trump Administration wound down, Musk has strongly criticized Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill,” which passed in the House, while also calling for the president’s impeachment.

“I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing,” said Musk.

Trump was taken aback by Musk’s denunciation of the bill, saying he was “very disappointed” in the former leader of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative.

“He knew every aspect of this bill. He knew it better than almost anybody, and he never had a problem until right after he left,” Trump said.

The feud escalated even further on Thursday as the two traded jabs on social media.

“Time to drop the really big bomb,” wrote Musk in a social media post. “[Trump] is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public.”

In response to Musk’s strong accusation, Trump threatened to end the government contracts for Musk’s companies.

“The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Government Subsidies and Contracts,” wrote Trump on social media.

Trump even questioned why Musk appeared at an Oval Office press conference last week with a black eye – but refused his offer to wear makeup.

According to the New York Times, Trump has blamed Musk’s drug use for the outburst in private meetings.

It seems hopes of mending the relationship between Trump and Musk have vanished, as what began as a policy disagreement has escalated into a series of personal attacks.

“This is an unfortunate episode from Elon, who is unhappy with the One Big Beautiful Bill because it does not include the policies he wanted,” said White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt in a statement regarding the online dispute.

Allies caught in the middle of the feud reportedly attempted to defuse the tension between the two, but it is now seen as a lost cause.
