Trump Bashes California & Gov. Gavin Newsom For Allowing Transgender Athletes To Compete

President Donald Trump threatened to cut off federal funding from California for allegedly violating his executive order barring student-athletes from participating in women’s sports.

Trump’s remarks referred to a transgender student-athlete who qualified to compete in California’s state finals for girls’ track and field, which is scheduled to be held May 30-31.

In a post to social media, Trump called out Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-California) for seemingly going back on his assertion that allowing transgender athletes in girls’ and women’s sports is “deeply unfair.”

“California, under the leadership of Radical Left Democrat Gavin Newscum, continues to ILLEGALLY allow ‘MEN TO PLAY IN WOMEN’S SPORTS,'” Trump wrote in a post to social media. “THIS IS NOT FAIR, AND TOTALLY DEMEANING TO WOMEN AND GIRLS.”

As a result, the president made it clear that California’s noncompliance with the executive order, signed in February, would not be tolerated.

“Please be hereby advised that large-scale Federal Funding will be held back, maybe permanently, if the Executive Order on this subject matter is not adhered to,” Trump added.

Trump also ordered local authorities “to not allow the transitioned person to compete in the State Finals.”

This is not the first time the Trump administration has struck down on policies that allow transgender student-athletes to compete in sports based on their gender identity. In March, Trump cut $175 million in federal funding from the University of Pennsylvania regarding the institution’s transgender student-athlete policies.

California state law permits transgender student-athletes to compete in sports that align with their gender identity. Last month, Democratic lawmakers in California blocked multiple bills that would have officially banned transgender athletes from partaking in girls’ sports.

In response to Trump’s threats, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) made amendments to the rules for the upcoming state finals for track and field, referring to it as a “pilot entry process.”

Athletes assigned female at birth will receive medals based on where they would have finished if a transgender athlete had not competed against them. Transgender athletes will receive medals based on their placement in the event.

Newsom appears to approve of the CIF’s “pilot entry process.”

“The Governor is encouraged by this thoughtful approach,” said Izzy Gardon, a spokesman for Newsom, in a public statement regarding the changes.

Trump has yet to respond to the CIF’s updated rules.
