President Donald Trump attacked the Supreme Court on Thursday after it ruled against the administration in two high-profile cases this week, pledging to release a new list of conservative Supreme Court Justice nominees ahead by September.
“The recent Supreme Court decisions, not only on DACA, Sanctuary Cities, Census, and others, tell you only one thing, we need NEW JUSTICES of the Supreme Court,” Trump tweeted after SCOTUS temporarily blocked his decision to eliminate the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program which protects nearly 700,000 undocumented immigrants. “Religious Liberty, among many other things, are OVER and GONE!”
The census ruling Trump referred to, was his proposal that the 2020 census include a citizenship question. Chief Justice John Roberts was the deciding swing vote on both the DACA and census decisions.

In a separate tweet, Trump announced that he will release a list of potential SCOTUS nominees by Sept. 1.
“If given the opportunity, I will only choose from this list, as in the past, a Conservative Supreme Court Justice,” Trump tweeted. “Based on decisions being rendered now, this list is more important than ever before (Second Amendment, Right to Life, Religous Liberty, etc.) — VOTE 2020!”
In addition to the DACA decision, the Supreme Court went against the wishes of the Trump administration on Monday when it ruled 6-3 that employees cannot be fired for their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Despite Trump’s desire to secure a solid conservative majority in the court, he may only appoint justices once a sitting member dies or retires. None of the liberal justices have thus far indicated they are prepared to retire.
