Former President Donald Trump called on the Supreme Court on Monday to hold off the release of his tax returns from the Internal Revenue Service to the Democratic-led House Ways and Means Committee.
Last week a federal appeals court allowed for the tax returns to be released. Trump’s legal team requested that the release be paused while the high court determines whether or not to take on the case.
As it stands now, the House committee will be able to obtain the records on Thursday.
Trump’s lawyer listed two reasons for their request, “The mooting of their legal claims and the disclosure of their confidential information.”

Trump’s team insists that the House committee, which says it needs the tax returns to aid in their work of a review of the IRS auditing system for presidents and vice presidents, has ulterior motives and will release the records publically.
“The committee’s purpose in requesting President Trump’s tax returns has nothing to do with funding or staffing issues at the IRS and everything to do with releasing the president’s tax information to the public,” the filing read.
In 2016, Trump became the first presidential nominee in the modern day to choose not to release tax returns, igniting the long-held belief that Trump has been a part of wrongful business dealings.
Trump is currently under investigation for possibly mishandling classified White House documents and involvement in election fraud in Georgia. The Trump Organization is also being investigated by Letitia James in New York for potential fraud in its’ valuation process of real estate.
