WASHINGTON, DC - DECEMBER 06: U.S. President Donald Trump hosts a roundtable discussion with small business owners and members of his administration in the Roosevelt Room at the White House December 06, 2019 in Washington, DC.
A top donor to President Donald Trump and Republican National Committee, Louis DeJoy, has been appointed as a new leader of the U.S. Postal Service.
DeJoy, a Brooklyn-born businessman based in North Carolina, is set to replace Postmaster General Megan Brennan. She was appointed in 2015 by former President Barack Obama and was the first woman to hold this title.
DeJoy has reportedly donated over $360,000 to the president’s re-election campaign this year and gave $70,000 to the Republican National Committee.
Trump has been criticizing the leadership of Brennan, claiming that she has been influenced by e-commerce giants like Amazon.

In April, he criticized the U.S. Postal Service as “a joke” and pressured the agency to raise prices for packages “four times or five times.” Trump said that he would block any fundings for the agency unless it is willing to raise the price.
“They don’t want to raise it, because they don’t want to insult Amazon,” Trump said. “If they don’t raise the price, I’m not signing anything.”
Following the appointment of DeJoy, Rep. Gerald Connolly (D-Virginia) commented that Trump’s move was nakedly political.
“President Trump rewards a partisan donor by installing him at the United States Postal Service,” Connolly said. “The Postal Service is in crisis and needs real leadership and someone with knowledge of the issues. This crony doesn’t cut it.”
