Ed Martin, the Trump-appointed Interim U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C., has launched an investigation into threats against federal workers and said the department would examine Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-New York), the Democratic leader in the Senate, after people working for Elon Musk to downsize the government said they’ve been threatened.
Martin said in an email that the probe arose from a conversation with an employee of Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the entity created by President Donald Trump that triggered a wave of layoffs in the federal government.
“Late last night, I took a call from a senior DOGE staffer. We discussed some pressing tech issues, and then he told me about threats against DOGE workers. It is despicable that these men and women are being threatened,” Martin said in the email.
The initiative is named Operation Whirlwind because Schumer at a 2020 abortion rights rally addressed Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, “You have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price.”
