Judge Aileen Cannon has been assigned to initially oversee Donald Trump‘s documents case in Miami .
Cannon, who was appointed by Trump, has raised concerns among legal observers about her perceived bias toward the ex-president.
Trump was indicted on seven charges on Thursday, including one under the Espionage Act. The charges come after months of investigations into Trump’s mishandling of government documents at his Mar-a-Lago residence.
Trump appointed Cannon to the federal bench in 2020 before he left office. If Trump is convicted, Cannon would be responsible for sentencing him.

Legal experts believe Cannon handed Trump several victories over the past few months as the classified documents case unfolded.
One instance included restricting the FBI from using the documents until a special master reviewed the documents. Her decision was overruled by an appeals court.
It is unclear if Cannon will preside over the full case or just its initial phase.
