Trump Announces 2024 Campaign For President As GOP Grows Restless With His Leadership

Despite a disappointing midterm election cycle for Republicans, former President Donald Trump announced his bid for the White House in 2024 on Tuesday night.

While the Republicans will likely flip the House, the Senate will likely remain controlled by the Democrats.

Trump made the announcement on Tuesday night from his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida, and Republicans are already split on backing another run from Trump.

Trump has been embroiled in various investigations since leaving office shortly following the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. He is currently under investigation for his role in inciting the January 6 insurrection, for possibly mishandling classified White House documents and for taking part in alleged election fraud in Georgia. The Trump Organization is also being investigated in New York for partaking in fraudulent valuation practices.

Some Republicans lay blame on Trump for the third consecutive disappointing election cycle, saying his involvement was too great. He was an outspoken supporter of Arizona’s losing gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake (R) and Dr. Mehmet Oz who fell to John Fetterman (D) in his Senate campaign in Pennsylvania.

Notably, Trump ally Herschel Walker (R) and Raphael Warnock (D) will compete in a December runoff and neither candidate was able to bring in 50% of the votes.

Republicans also point to Trump’s negative comments about other Republicans as divisive and a bad look for someone who wants to represent a whole party. In the past week, he called Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) “average” and called him out for being “disloyal” and “classless.”
