Trump Amends $20 Billion Lawsuit Against CBS, Claiming It Manipulated Kamala Harris’ ’60 Minutes’ Interview

President Donald Trump has added new claims to his lawsuit against CBS News, alleging that the network engaged in deceptive advertising after 60 Minutes released an unedited interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris before the 2024 election. Trump’s lawyers claimed that the alleged manipulation negatively impacted the president and constituted unfair marketing practices against his platform Truth Social, doubling the damages incurred to $20 billion.

In October, Trump sued CBS for engaging in “partisan and unlawful acts of election and voter interference through malicious, deceptive, and substantial news distortion,” claiming the outlet used deceptive editing techniques to make Harris look more favorable. New claims suggest that the latest release of the unedited transcript has caused Trump “financial loss” by diverting traffic from his Truth Social platform.

The motion filed in Amarillo, Texas, federal court by Trump’s attorneys’ late claims that CBS manipulated “the nature, characteristics, and qualities of their broadcast and digital services; deceived consumers, including plaintiffs, through advertisement and commercial promotion of substantially distorted broadcast and digital media content masquerading as news.”

“In reporting the news, journalists regularly edit interviews – for time, space, or clarity,” CBS News said. “In making these edits, 60 Minutes is always guided by the truth and what we believe will be most informative to the viewing public – all while working within the constraints of broadcast television.”

The raw transcript was published on Wednesday after the Federal Communications Commission requested the materials in response to a “news distortion” complaint filed by the Center for American Rights.

“The FCC has concluded that establishing a docket and seeking comment on the issues raised in the complaint would serve the public interest,” said FCC Chair Brendan Carr. The FCC has since been criticized for “implementing the will of the Administration” beyond its responsibilities and opposed its trustworthiness as an unbiased source.

In the initial interview, 60 Minutes released an excerpt of Harris’ response to whether or not she believed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was listening to the Biden-Harris administration. The full response was released in a segment of Face the Nation before it was cut in half later that evening.

“We are not going to stop pursuing what is necessary for the United States to be clear about where we stand on the need for this war to end,” Harris said in the heavily edited special.

In response to allegations of deceptive marketing, CBS News said the excerpt was meant to “reflect the substance of the vice president’s answer.” A spokesperson on behalf of CBS News said that the experts were shortened in a way that ‘fairly represented’ the scope of Harris’ response to fit the length of the program.

“Once Defendants finally released the unedited version of the Interview, it became apparent that they had engaged in gross broadcast distortion cover-up and manipulated not only Harris’s Reply about Prime Minister Netanyahu, but the Interview in its entirety,” the court filing reads.
