Former President Donald Trump is being accused of tampering with witnesses by promising to pardon those involved in the Jan. 6 Capitol assault if he is reelected.
Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-California) said Trump “absolutely” tampered with witnesses. “Now he’s dangling pardons if he gets back into office for individuals,” Aguilar said.
According to Trump, those involved in the attack are being treated unfairly. But even Republicans are pushing back against this latest gambit. Gov. Chris Sununu (R-New Hampshire) said, “The folks that were part of the riots and frankly the assault on the U.S. Capitol have to be held accountable.”
Robert Jenkins, attorney for the riot defendants, claimed his clients are aware of Trump’s promises and could see how it might affect the outcome of the trial. Jenkins said Trump’s words are not “witness tampering,” rather putting his “fingers on the scales.”

Aguilar and the January 6 House Committee are still gathering testimony and processing vital documents. They are also seeking more information from individuals who were around former Vice President Mike Pence.
Stephanie Grisham, former White House press secretary, claimed that Trump had secret meetings in the White House before the U.S. Capitol attack. During the course of these meetings only selective aides knew about them. They were organized by Trump’s chief of staff, Mark Meadows.
Meadows reached an agreement with the House committee to release documents and sit for a deposition about the attack and events preceding it. He eventually reversed his position and refused to cooperate with the committee.
