Texas Sen. Ted Cruz was speechless for a full 18 seconds following a reporter asking about whether President Donald Trump can pardon himself.
After this very long pause, Cruz responded with: “That is not a constitutional issue I have studied, so I will withhold judgment at this point.”
This question came following the New York Times publishing a memo two of Trump’s attorneys had sent special counsel Robert Mueller, which stated the president had the power to pardon himself from the investigation. Trump reiterated this in a tweet, but insisted he has done nothing wrong and therefore has no need to pardon himself.
