Jack Smith, the special counsel who conducted the two federal prosecutions of President-elect Donald Trump, plans to resign with fellow team members before Trump takes office after his inauguration in January.
Smith’s goal is not to leave any significant part of his work for others to take over and get ahead of Trump’s promise to fire him immediately after being sworn in.
Smith, who took office two years ago, has operated under the assumption that no one, even a former president, is above the law. He now finds himself on the defensive and rushing to finish complex investigations, which the U.S. Supreme Court has slowed with its rulings.
Trump has repeatedly called Smith “deranged” on social media.
