Republican senator Bob Corker is worried that Donald Trump‘s presidency is threatening to put the country “on the path to World War III.”
Corker, who is also the Republican chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said in an interview Sunday that Trump is treating his office like a reality show, “like he’s doing The Apprentice or something.” Corker showed concern that Trump’s reckless actions may spark another World War. “He would have to concern anyone who cares about our nation,” the senator added.
Prior to the interview, Trump took to Twitter Sunday morning and accused Corker of deciding not torun for re-election because he “didn’t have the guts.” So Corker shot back via the social media site, “It’s a shame the White House has become an adult day care center. Someone obviously missed their shift this morning.”
The pair bickered more throughout the day, with the president claiming that Corker had “begged” for an endorsement but Trump declined. “Senator Bob Corker ‘begged’ me to endorse him for re-election in Tennessee. I said ‘NO’ and he dropped out (said he could not win without…..my endorsement),” the president wrote in three tweets. “He also wanted to be Secretary of State, I said ‘NO THANKS.'” He is also largely responsible for the horrendous Iran Deal! …Hence, I would fully expect Corker to be a negative voice and stand in the way of our great agenda. Didn’t have the guts to run!”

Corker denied the accusation, and stated that Trump had promised to endorse him if he ran again. “I don’t know why the president tweets out things that are not true. You know he does it, everyone knows he does it, but he does,” the senator said. “When I told him that that just wasn’t in the cards, he said, ‘You know, if you run, I’ll endorse you.’ I said, ‘Mr. President, it’s just not in the cards; I’ve already made a decision.’ So then we began talking about other candidates that were running.”
Corker used this exchange to further his point that Trump is volatile. “I know for a fact that every single day at the White House, it’s a situation of trying to contain him,” he stated. In addition, he said that most Senate Republicans feel the same way as he does. “They understand the volatility that we’re dealing with and the tremendous amount of work that it takes by people around him to keep him in the middle of the road,” he added.
“As long as there are people like that around him who are able to talk him down when he gets spun up, you know, calm him down and continue to work with him before a decision gets made, I think we’ll be fine,” he said, though he still doesn’t think Trump understands the power of his office. “I don’t think he appreciates that when the president of the United States speaks and says the things that he does, the impact that it has around the world, especially in the region that he’s addressing. And so, yeah, it’s concerning to me.”
