Senate Recess Shortened As Border Negotiations Persist, Schumer Announces

On Thursday afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-New York) said that the Senate would cut their holiday recess short and reconvene on Monday.

The decision was made to allow lawmakers to work on reaching an agreement concerning the border deal in the national security supplemental funding request.

“That will give negotiators from the White House, Senate Democrats, Senate Republicans, a time to work through the weekend in an effort to reach a framework agreement. It will then take some time to turn that framework into text,” he stated while addressing the session.

Schumer stated that he intends to suggest reevaluating the basic structure of the law to advance border provisions within the additional bill. He also emphasized the importance of all senators being aware that they will be voting on a supplementary proposal in the following week.

He acknowledged the challenges involved in reaching an agreement on such a complex matter, which has vexed Congress for decades.

Meanwhile, GOP lawmakers expressed doubt that a border agreement incorporating changes in policies at the southern border could be achieved before Christmas. Sen.
