While more than ten million Texans are still without power and another winter storm surge threatens the state this weekend, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) packed a bag and flew to Cancún, Mexico on  Wednesday for a previously planned family trip.

Cruz received massive backlash after pictures of him leaving from George Bush Intercontinental Airport went viral on Twitter.

Cruz’s office released a statement Thursday, after the Senator left for Cancún saying, “With school canceled for the week, our girls asked to take a trip with friends. Wanting to be a good dad, I flew down with them last night and am flying back this afternoon…. This has been an infuriating week for Texans.”

Cruz is already under fire for tweets last year criticizing California while they were experiencing rolling blackouts. Now that his own state was suffering similar circumstances, Cruz said he had “no defense” on Twitter. Cruz sent his tweet hours before boarding his flight to Cancún.

Cruz also publicly attacked Austin mayor Stephen Adler for flying to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico in December 2020 while telling Austin residents to “stay home” during the region’s deadly COVID-19 spike. Cruz issued an identical warning one day before his flight to Cancún Wednesday. Cruz’s 2020 tweet criticizing Alder’s own tropical vacation writes, “Hypocrites. Complete and utter hypocrites.”
