Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) is being treated for a concussion after falling at a Washington hotel.
“Leader McConnell tripped at a dinner event Wednesday evening and has been admitted to the hospital and is being treated for a concussion,” McConnell’s spokesman, David Popp, said in a statement. “He is expected to remain in the hospital for a few days of observation and treatment.”
The fall happened after a fundraiser at the Waldorf Astoria hotel, formerly the Trump Hotel. Several Republican Senators were reported to have been present for the event.
The fall occurred on Wednesday night. The Minority Leader was taken to the George Washington University Hospital at 9 p.m. that night.

McConnel had been leading over Senate Republicans throughout the week, scoring a victory to change local Washington D.C. penal codes.
“The White House and House Democrats came out against Republicans overturning D.C.’s soft-on-crime law,” McConnell tweeted after the political victory. “Now Dems want to flip-flop. But the record’s clear. Last year every Senate Democrat voted on party lines against using some of their reckless spending spree to combat crime.”
Throughout the week, Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania) was in the hospital receiving treatment for clinical depression. The absence of a Democratic Senator forced Vice President Kamala Harris to cast the deciding vote.
McConnell, 81, is the longest-serving Republican leader in the Senate. In November, he survived a challenge from Sen. Rick Scott (R-Florida) to maintain his top seat in the Senate GOP. McConnell beat Scott by a resounding 37-10 vote.
