Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) spoke openly about freshman Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) on Monday night calling her embrace of “loony lies” a “cancer for the Republican Party.”
McConnell has become increasingly outspoken against former President Donald Trump and those who align with his debunked voter fraud conspiracy theories. McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao, stepped down as transportation secretary after the Capitol riots. McConnell said that he believes Trump is responsible for the Capitol riots.
“Somebody who’s suggested that perhaps no airplane hit the Pentagon on 9/11, that horrifying school shootings were pre-staged, and that the Clintons crashed JFK Jr.’s airplane is not living in reality,” said McConnell in reference to Greene. “This has nothing to do with the challenges facing American families or the robust debates on substance that can strengthen our party.”
McConnell also defended Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming), who has been receiving heavy backlash from Republicans after she voted to impeach Trump. Since her vote, Cheney has been branded a ‘traitor’ by party members like Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida), who pledged to campaign for her opponent in the next election.

“Liz Cheney is a leader with deep convictions and the courage to act on them,” McConnell said on Tuesday. “She is an important leader in our party and in our nation. I am grateful for her service and look forward to continuing to work with her on the crucial issues facing our nation.”
McConnell is increasing pressure on the Republican House leadership to meaningfully reprimand Greene. While House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has said that he plans to “speak” to Greene about her conduct, McConnell’s condemnation of her conduct will undoubtedly influence him.
Greene later responded to McConnell on Twitter saying, “This is why we are losing our country.”
